Chennai Super Kings fans may have to prepare for the possibility that they have already witnessed the final chapter of MS Dhoni’s legendary IPL career. With IPL 2026 entering its decisive phase, growing speculation around Dhoni’s future has intensified after the veteran wicketkeeper-batter missed yet another match for CSK. If he does not return later in the tournament, this could become the first season in his remarkable 18-year IPL journey without a single appearance on the field.

What is confirmed for now is that Dhoni will not feature in Chennai Super Kings’ final league-stage clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. CSK batting coach and former Australia cricketer Michael Hussey revealed before the match that the 44-year-old had returned home and was unavailable for selection.
However, Hussey also hinted that Dhoni’s IPL 2026 story may not be completely over yet. If Chennai somehow manage to qualify for the playoffs, the former CSK captain could rejoin the squad. “I can confirm he is not here with the team, but if we happen to qualify, then he will definitely join back up with the side,” Michael Hussey told reporters.

Dhoni’s absence has been one of the biggest talking points of the season. He was initially ruled out of the opening phase of IPL 2026 because of a calf strain. Reports later suggested that Dhoni deliberately stayed away from travelling with the squad on matchdays to avoid unnecessary attention and to keep the focus on the younger players.

Even after regaining partial fitness, Dhoni reportedly chose not to make the playing XI ahead of emerging options such as Kartik Sharma. With injuries piling up in the CSK camp, including Jamie Overton being ruled out, there was growing anticipation that Dhoni could finally return against Lucknow Super Giants.
Although CSK continued posting training visuals of the iconic wicketkeeper, Dhoni later suffered a fresh setback with a thumb injury. Hussey confirmed that the injury was improving, but not enough for immediate selection.

“He has got a bit of a sore thumb. It’s recovering nicely, but he wouldn’t be ready for this match. Hopefully, if we qualify for the playoffs, he should be alright,” Michael Hussey added.
For now, uncertainty continues to surround one of the greatest careers in IPL history, leaving CSK fans anxiously waiting for clarity on Dhoni’s future.
