Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has fired back with a bold response to former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar’s remarks regarding the Champions Trophy 2025 prize money. Without taking names, Gambhir’s sharp retort at the ABP India At 2047 Summit made it clear who his words were aimed at.

“Those living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones at others,” he said, clearly addressing the criticism aimed at him. Gautam Gambhir emphasized that he doesn’t owe explanations about how he manages his finances. Responding to questions about criticism, the newly-appointed head coach didn’t hold back, taking a veiled dig at those who, in his view, have monopolized public commentary.

“Some people have made the commentary box their personal fiefdom for 25 years. They’ve spoken on everything—from my concussion to how the Champions Trophy prize money was handled,” he added.

Taking the discussion a step further, Gautam Gambhir challenged the double standards of those questioning his integrity.

“Rather than asking me where my money goes, the country should question those who hold NRI status by spending just under 180 days in India. I don’t need to justify how I use my money,” he asserted.

The debate was triggered by Gavaskar’s earlier comment, where he indirectly questioned whether Gambhir would follow the example of Rahul Dravid. After India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, Dravid had turned down a higher payout and instead chose to accept the same prize amount as his support staff.

Sunil Gavaskar implied a similar gesture should be expected after India’s Champions Trophy win over New Zealand, where the BCCI had announced a generous ₹58 crore reward for the team. Gambhir’s forthright response has reignited the debate on transparency, entitlement, and expectations from high-profile figures in Indian cricket.
