Eng vs Ind (Third Test): Day Two – Hardik Pandya’s maiden international fifer opens a massive opportunity for India

Indian medium pace bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya claimed his maiden five-wicket haul that gives huge first innings lead and shapes the match for the visiting side India in the ongoing Trent Bridge Test.

The day two of the third Test between England and India at Trent Bridge (Nottingham) had a delayed start due to the wet outfield. India began the day on their overnight score 307/6 but bundled out for just 329 runs. Debutant wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who was not out at last night on 22 runs, was dismissed on 24 runs.

Among the English bowlers, James Anderson (3/64), Stuart Broad (3/72) and Chris Woakes (3/75) picked up three wickets each while Adil Rashid (1/46) claimed the only wicket.

In reply, England had a good start as the openers Alastair Cook (29) and Keaton Jennings (20) put a 54-run opening partnership. But once they were dismissed in back-to-back deliveries, England batting faced a massive collapse.

Only the no.7 batsman Jos Buttler reached the 30-run mark as he scored 39 runs while Cook and Jennings are the only other English batsmen in that innings to reach the 20-run mark. England’s first innings ended in just 38.2 overs after they were bowled out for just 161 runs and India took a massive 168 runs lead.

Indian medium-pacer Hardik Pandya scalped five wickets as his bowling figure was 6-1-28-5. On the other hand, other Indian pacers Ishant Sharma (2/32) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/37) took two wickets each while Mohammed Shami (1/56) picked up one wicket.

After a big first innings lead, India finished the day two on 124/2 with the extended lead of 292 runs. While both the openers Shikhar Dhawan (44 runs) and KL Rahul (36 runs) were dismissed after another good 60-run opening partnership, Cheteshwar Pujara (33*) and the skipper Virat Kohli (8*) remained unbeaten.

Among the English bowlers, Bens Stokes (1/30) and Adil Rashid (1/23) picked up one wicket each.

  • English pacer James Anderson (501 international wickets at home) completed his 500 international wickets in the home venues. Only the second bowler in international cricket history to take 500 or more wickets at home. The first bowler to achieve this feat was the former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan with 647 international wickets at home.
  • Also, James Anderson has taken 98 international wickets at home against India and becomes the most wicket-taker in international cricket against India at home. The previous record holder was former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan with 96 wickets in international cricket against India at home.
  • England was bundled out for just 161 runs. It was their fifth-lowest completed Test innings total against India on the home soil. Also, it is the lowest completed Test innings total for England against India at Trent Bridge (Nottingham), while their previous lowest at this venue was 198 in 2007.
  • England was bundled out in just 38.2 overs. It is the second fastest (according to no.of overs in an innings) for India to bowl out England in a Test innings. The record is England had been bundled out in just 26.2 overs (102 runs) at Mumbai in 1981.
  • Indian medium-pacer Hardik Pandya had the bowling figure of 6-1-28-5. It is the best bowling figure in a Test innings by an Indian bowler at Trent Bridge (Nottingham). The previous record was 5/75 by Zaheer Khan in 2007.
  • Hardik Pandya completed his five-wicket haul in just 29 balls. It is the second fewest balls bowled by an Indian bowler to complete the five-wicket haul in a Test innings. The record holder is off-spinner Harbhajan Singh who took only 27 balls to complete the five-wicket haul in a Test innings against West Indies at Jamaica in 2006.
  • Making his Test debut at the age of just 20 years and 318 days, Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant took five catches during England’s first innings of this Test match. He is the youngest wicketkeeper to take five catches in a Test innings. The previous record holder was Chris Read (England) who had achieved this feat at the age of 20 years and 325 days against New Zealand at Birmingham in 1999.
  • Indian debutant wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant took five catches during England’s first innings of this Test match. Only the second Indian wicketkeeper to take five catches in the debutant Test innings. Yajurvindra Singh had also achieved the same record during his debutant Test against England at Bengaluru in 1977.
