The 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) will be the 12th edition of the tournament and it seems to be to go on without a chairman or even a governing council for the first time ever.

The IPL 2019 is facing setbacks for many reasons. While the tournament needs to finish early this time as the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup will begin from 30 May 2019, the national general elections have put a serious question to host the tournament in India.

If the tournament shifts outside India – entirely or partly, it will be the third time when the tournament has been organised outside the Indian soil. South Africa hosted the entire tournament in 2009 while UAE partly hosted the IPL 2014 (India hosted the second half).

The tournament schedule planning is also facing a big issue as the general elections’ dates haven’t come out yet. On the other hand, the broadcaster Star India, who has won the five-year (2018-2022) broadcasting bid for more than INR 16,000 crore, doesn’t want to shift the tournament outside India.

While the tournament is trying to fight out against these entire issues, another important thing has been broken out recently. While currently, IPL has no chairman or a governing council, it seems like that the tournament will go ahead without improving this present status as the AGM can be held only after the general elections. If the present status continues during the IPL 2019, it will be the first IPL to be conducted without a chairman or a governing council.

A BCCI official told Hindustan Times, “Yes, the new chairman will be appointed only after elections are conducted and as of now, all IPL matters will be looked into by the CoA, IPL COO, CEO and the office-bearers.

“In all its years, this is the first time that the IPL is without a chairman or even a governing council. It is a dangerous situation to be in since the decision making is anything but democratic and even in the past it was such a scenario when decision making was centred in one man, a former IPL chairman, that the BCCI was rocked by financial scandals.

“The Lodha panel in its report had said that the idea of the report was to ensure that concentration of too much power in one man is avoided but that seems to be exactly what has been achieved.”
